Vodniy stadium
Built on the banks of a large reservoir in the north part of Moscow, the Vodniy ‘stadium’, a popular recreational spot during the mid-20th century, has undergone extensive transformation to become an exclusive weekend destination once more. Oleg Klodt Architectural Bureau was commissioned to create a luxury apartment within the complex as a private retreat for the client’s family to enjoy relaxing weekends away from their hectic city life. The new interior is an interpretation of contemporary Parisian style, from which the apartment differs by virtue of its subdued, almost Nordic finishes such as simply painted walls and honey-toned oak flooring. The panoramic windows of the apartment look out to stunning views of the reservoir, and this provided the architectural inspiration for the design. . . The property was previously used as offices, so the floorplan had to be completely reconfigured into a family residence. In addition, ceilings were raised to expand the available space and expose the original metal girders. One of the apartment’s most striking components is the two-storey tower that has been transformed into a children’s zone, with a compact and cosy bedroom below and a playroom upstairs, linked by a bronze staircase. A light well was created in the floor between the two levels to allow natural light to penetrate through to the lower space. The bespoke fitted furniture, including the writing desk, was all specifically designed by the team. . . The spacious open-plan living and dining room was conceived as a continuation of the exterior landscape, evoking a sensation of lightness. This space is furnished in a sophisticated colour palette, using luxurious fabrics and an eclectic mix of works of art comprising of interesting forms and materials. A mid-century style wall sculpture features a blend of finishes that are echoed elsewhere in the interior; the oyster white of the walls and ceiling, copper and brass details in pieces of furniture, and a distinctive gold-toned sideboard. These red and golden hues offset turquoise accents that allude to the expansive body of water nearby. Highlighting the geometry of the dining space is an exquisite chandelier of cast glass and copper droplets that appears to ‘float’ above the dining table. The owners enjoy cosy evenings around the fireplace so this was given pride of place in the living area. Radiators were a necessary addition here, and a creative solution was found in the elegant mirrors with their individually-designed frames – these are in fact mirror radiators. . . Immediately upon entering the master bedroom, the eye is drawn to an expanse of sky and water, which is viewed through the full width glass windows and exudes tranquillity. The bespoke bed and brilliant turquoise upholstered wall panel behind were both designed by Oleg Klodt Studio, with the aim to further convey serenity, while the abstract painting by a Russian artist suggests movement of the natural elements outside. . . This apartment project was designed to create a contemporary and comfortable family weekend residence that is in harmony with nature. . .
